Split This Rock Poetry Festival

Split This Rock Poetry FestivalPoets Sarah Browning, Reggio Cabico and Melissa Tuckey began this burgeoning DC poetry festival in 2008. As a New Yorker, I jumped at the chance to peripherally involve myself in a project that strikes so close to the Nation’s Capital in hopes of opening some ears to poets’ voices. 2008, I had the honor of presenting a panel with poets Kazim Ali and Jeffrey Davis “Yogic Path to Poetry and Conscious Freedom.” I also co-hosted a workshop with numinous poet Nathaniel Seigel called “Off the Page and into the Streets.” Always, one of my favorite moments of the festival is when we walk silently with our handmade poetry posters to the White House or Supreme Court and participants recite a line of poetry, culminating in one large poem or cento.

In March, 2014, Kazim Ali and I will present the workshop “May All Beings Be Happy and Free: Jivamukti Yoga as a Personal, Artistic and Political Practice.”  I’m looking forward to the next STR, DC in spring, and heavy dose of celebratory poetry!
